This is a guest post written by Lisa Russell, Chapter Director of Sharp Skirts’ Chicago branch. Sharp Skirts is an organization that gives women the content and connections they need to build smart, successful companies.
Anyone familiar with Zealous Good, is aware of the amazing impact they have on our local charities. They are truly changing the way that individuals approach donations, maximizing the effect of each item we give, all while providing the local charities a voice and platform for requesting exactly what they need.
Outside of their donation-matching platform, Brittany and the Zealous Good team truly work to connect and understand the needs of each of their associated local charities. So, when launching the Sharp Skirts Chicago chapter last summer, I knew she would be able to provide me the best match for our organization.
Sharp Skirts represents a wide range of startups, women-owned businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs. The network is committed to providing women the content and connections they need to build smart, successful companies. We wanted our ticket proceeds to benefit a like-minded women’s organization that also focused on empowering and providing resources to women.
Zealous Good suggested and introduced me to New Mom’s, Inc, a Chicago based non-profit organization that seeks to enable, empower and equip at-risk adolescent parents for the business world. Founded in 1983, the organization has assisted over a thousand adolescent mothers and their children by providing housing, education support, career training and mentoring.
After learning more about the organization, we happily donated the proceeds from our first event and couldn’t turn down the opportunity to work with them again. Leveraging the Sharp Skirts Chicago network of women, we organized a professional development day for the women of New Mom’s Inc.
We spent a day with just under 50 adolescent mothers that were hungry for advice and career inspiration. While our amazing group of speakers discussed topics such as goal setting, resume writing, interview preparation and leadership, the participants openly shared their experiences, what they wanted to achieve in life and the hurdles they each come across on a daily basis. It was an inspirational day for all and we appreciate that Zealous Good was able to connect our organizations and make this unforgettable event possible.
“I wanted to thank you so much for hosting the “Professional Development Day” for the participants enrolled in the Academy of Professional Development here at New Moms. I can’t express to you how grateful I am that our participants had this opportunity to interact and attend the different workshops that your Sharp Skirts volunteers conducted. The workshops were extremely informative and covered valuable information that each of the participants will be able to utilize during this beginning stage of their careers.”
