This is a guest post from Chicago producer, performer and writer Nellie Huggins.
Giving back to the community is one of the most important things that a person can do.
I was raised in a home where giving back to my community and helping those who were less fortunate were common and implicit. I’ve never known any differently, so naturally as an adult, charity is a regular part of my life. I also have a love of theater and live performance, specifically comedy, so when I began producing in 2008, I wanted to find a way to combine my two loves into one. Doing comedy fundraisers has been one of the most rewarding tasks I have ever taken on.
“Show Us Your Goods” was developed after I started donating through Zealous Good last winter. I was so moved by the concept as a whole that I decided I wanted to do more. The most efficient way for me to contribute on a larger scale became obvious: I will combine my two passions, charity and comedy, into one show and raise as much awareness as I possibly can.
“Show Us Your Goods” will be a monthly show, produced at Gorilla Tango Theater, that will showcase the best comedic talent in Chicago, who are all donating their time and energy to the project. Each month we will sponsor a different business or organization in Chicago, and all of the profit from the show will go directly to purchasing the items that are needed.
I am very excited to begin this journey, and glad to finally be able to combine my passion for comedy and charity on a consistent basis.
Nellie is currently producing and writing about comedy all over Chicago. In her free time, she likes to pick out clothing for her small dog and avoid calls from her mom. You can find her on Gapers Block, Examiner and at Mayne Stage Theater this summer, producing her critically acclaimed series, Atomic Comics.
