With the school year approaching, it’s time to once again rummage through your kids’ old school supplies to determine what exactly they can reuse during the upcoming school year. As you look through the pile, you compare it with your list of what they need: pencils, rulers, markers, folders, notebooks – the list goes on. During this tedious process, you realize that your children have outgrown their school uniforms from last year, and you need to purchase new ones. But what do you do with the old ones? They are in relatively good shape, and it would be a shame to just toss them, but how can you find someone who needs them?
Luckily, there exist several places to send a school uniform donation. For example, if you are in the Chicagoland area, you can donate items using Zealous Good. Our easy-to-use process lets you donate your gently-used uniform to a Chicago charity that needs it. If you don’t live in Chicago, here are some other options to consider:
Your Local School District
Usually, it’s best to simply donate those outgrown uniforms to the very place you use them, your local school! School districts will often know families in the area who are in need, and they can easily put the uniform in their hands. In addition, some schools have yearly uniform drives that help them either give to those in need or stock a district-wide uniform bank. Finally, some schools, such as South Loop Elementary in Chicago, run resale shops that supply needy families with schoolwear for low prices.
Contact your local school district to see if they will accept a school uniform donation.
Churches, synagogues, and mosques will often run school uniform drives to support needy students in their own religious schools, or at a local public school district. Contact your local religious center or visit in-person to see if they could use your gently-used uniforms.
Finally, families in need will often shop at a local thrift store to find schoolwear for their children. If you have nowhere else to donate, consider giving to a resale shop such as Salvation Army, Goodwill, or a local version of these organizations. Proceeds from these retail shops benefit the charities’ programs.
