Here at Zealous Good, we’re all about helping people by utilizing in-kind donations. What does this mean? Well, “in-kind” means donating goods and services rather than plain old cash. In-kind donations – such as lightly used clothing, computers, office supplies, dry-cleaning services, or space for holding special events – cover a broad spectrum of purposes. Yep, almost everything in good condition can be useful to someone in need, including the services of professionals.
Zealous Good exists to make the “who, what, where, how” of donating easier. No idea how to donate that TV? Have a box of baby clothes you want to give away, but don’t know who to give it to? We have all the answers for you! Our interest in social welfare is the reason why Zealous Good was started! However, like any for-profit organization, there are costs to being a non-profit organization. Here is where your in-kind donations come in again!! Not only do donations directly help local people-in-need, but they also lower non-profit costs, allowing them to stay at the forefront of the cause.
Again, like any other company or organization, not-for-profits have overhead! For example, they are responsible for proper financial practices and reporting. This involves office supplies, computer software, and may often require the advice of an accountant. Additionally, a non-profit has staff that spends time commuting, planning, facilitating events, working with donors, organizing inventory, etcetera. Here’s some consequences non-profits face due to concerns about overhead:

All in all, ignoring non-profit overhead means we can’t effectively help those in need! And that, my friends, is our main purpose. Zealous Good is fueled by donations, so next time you have extra or want to de-clutter, keep us in mind! We know who needs your stuff!!
I am a big supporter of inkind donations, particularly for special events. While serving on a Board for a local nonprofit, I targeted specific inkind donations from businesses and individuals, successfully lowering the cost of having the event, and the items which were auctioned off increased the net results of the event. More should actively seek inkind donations and increase the sustainability of the donor relationships. Inkind donations also are a great entry for donors for future stewardship.
Richard – I completely agree. Also, when companies donate in kind to local organizations, they are able to develop stronger customer relationships. The companies are able to develop these relationships because they are making a concerted effort to invest in the community they belong to and therefore they are investing in their customers’ community. It can really all come full circle.
