October, month of many portmanteaus, comes to a close and with it any lingering hopes we had for a long, luxurious Indian summer. We don’t mind so much. Just yesterday, in lively discussion with dear friends over a positively inspired lunch of wings and toddies – both hot – it occurred to me the precise reason I so adore Chicago perhaps because, and not in spite of, the brutal winters. Everyone’s strength and desire to connect is on full display.
We joke about hibernation, sure, but who among us actually shuts down during the winter, retreats into the den with heavy stews and Netflix and forgets about the real need for kinesis and catharsis? No. We bundle and emerge, shuffle and seek out others. As the temperatures drop – and here on the precipice of November we must remember that they will, almost mercilessly – our self-motivation and iron wills are on the rise. Yes, we are ready, absolutely November, bring it; but let’s take one last appreciative look at the October we’re leaving behind as it was a truly phenomenal month.
Partner organization, St. Vincent de Paul Center helped make monsters out of a pile of children, thanks to materials donated by good and zealous Chicagoans. We felt a feverish enthusiasm for the upcoming Taste of Accion, which will feature two fantastic keynote speakers and food, entertainment, and silent auction prizes from local businesses. Three of our favorite nonprofit organizations of differing size and scope showed us how nonprofits can effectively use Facebook in our new recurring NPO Resource feature. Not bad, October. Not bad at all.
We welcomed a few wonderful organizations to the fold:
i.c. stars, creating successful individuals and leaders through the cunning use of technology and compassion.
Ravenswood Community Child Care Center, doing it for the kids, and doing it well.
Some exciting news and updates fired us up in time for the autumn chill!
We found ourselves in some seriously esteemed company on theĀ Chicago Innovation Awards’ list of the top 75 up and coming startups. We’ll be there with bells on November 8, will you?
Nearly $40,000 in goods and services donated – we are as ever so impressed and grateful for the good folks and companies of Chicago giving what they can toward the truly worthy causes our partner organizations represent. We cannot wait to see what you folks will give next.
Stay tuned for November updates on a wealth of new partner organizations, upcoming events, tips and tricks for nonprofit organizations fighting the good fight every day, and more exciting news in and around the social good community!
Til then, HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!
