As much as we would love it to, summer’s likely got no plan to last forever. With August rollerblading right on by, it’s time to dig in and make sure you get the most out of – and give the most to – your weekends. Now I’ve no intention on telling you how to live your life, but maybe you need a touch of inspiration.
LadyFest Midwest
Friday, August 19 – Sunday, August 21
Dancing! Music! Art! LadyFest has something for everybody, yes everybody – all gender identities welcome, of course. The 10-year anniversary of the 2001 event that raised $20,000 and brought together over 4,000 people from around the world will be celebrating global arts and activism all weekend long. The festival is run entirely by volunteers and all proceeds will benefit the Chicago Women’s Health Center.
Dance for Life Chicago
Saturday, August 20, 7:30Pm
Tickets are still available for the AIDS Foundation of Chicago’s annual gala and dance performance, a favorite of Zealous Good partner Chicago House and Social Service Agency. The event, organized to raise awareness and funds for HIV/AIDS prevention and care, will include performances by Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and the Joffrey Ballet. Sounds like a beautiful evening and a tremendous cause.
Everything But The Kitchen Sink Sidewalk Sale
Sunday, August 21, 12pm-4pm
Recall, in late June, that surprise hail storm that produced golf ball-sized chunks of ice and destroyed umbrellas? Haha, that was terrifying! Jerk move, weather system. That little meteorological melodrama did some catastrophic damage to the always beautiful and always free Garfield Park Conservatory, a year round delight and a particularly gorgeous haven in the winter. Too much direct sunlight can threaten many of the plants within, not to mention the dangerous shards of glass littering walkways and ponds and dangling from the ceiling. This is basically a horror movie to me.
This Sunday, Big Star is hosting a massive sidewalk sale featuring extra and unused kitchenware from Avec, Blackbird, The Violet Hour, and the Publican. Sales will go toward repairs at the Conservatory. For do-good double duty, pick up some new kitchen items and donate your old ones – plenty of families need them.
Woman Made Gallery Call for Art
Deadlines: August 24, September 28, November 9
Partner organization Woman Made Gallery has three upcoming exhibitions: Bare Essentials: Minimalism in the 21st Century, 20 in their 20s, and 15th International Open. Women artists from Chicago and far beyond working in are invited to submit their work in all themes, styles, and mediums. Time to finish that mixed media installation you’ve been too busy for all summer.
Chicago Air + Water Show
Saturday, August 20 – Sunday, August 21, 10AM – 3PM
Sure, you’ve been seeing (and probably hearing) this all week, but local favorite I Know Chicago has a few great tips to maximize your awe while minimizing your hassle. Like summer, weekends don’t last forever and you don’t want to spend the bulk of your time maneuvering through the crowds and grappling for a good view, right?
Use your hours saved to finish that painting, stop by a fundraiser, support your local farmers, or clean out your apartment and maybe even find a little something to give.
See you next week!
